On May 4th 2020, Google confirmed it was rolling out a core algorithm update – the second one this year, and the first one since the COVID-19 outbreak.
Google Search Liaison Danny Sullivan announced that the update was underway via Twitter, and could take around 1 to 2 weeks to roll out fully.
The May 2020 Core Update is now rolling out live. As is typical with these updates, it will typically take about one to two weeks to fully roll out.

Google haven’t released any information specific to this update, and are instead pointing us back to their general information on core updates – why they happen and where to place our focus.
It seems this update isn’t anything to worry about if your digital strategy is centered around content. As ever, content is the most important factor considered by Google when determining where to ‘rank’ a site. When these core updates come around, the algorithm just wants to make sure that the most fresh, relevant content is rewarded.
Any existing content needs to be re-assessed against new content, and as a result, you may well find that your rankings have been affected. If you look to have been negatively hit, don’t panic. Now is a great time to check over your content and ensure it’s up to date, valuable and original.
If your rankings look to have improved over the past week, then you must be doing something right! Keep on with your current strategy, but don’t forget to follow the guidelines.
A shift in search behaviour
It’s no surprise that search behaviour has changed dramatically since the COVID-19 outbreak. And more than ever before, Google has had to make sure its users are getting the most accurate information.
In just a month, Google saw a 96% uplift in coronavirus related search terms. People are seeking information for their own safety, information on how to adapt different areas of their lives, and information on where to find much needed products.
Hopefully this, and any future algorithm update will cater to these worldwide behaviour changes and ensure search results are reflective of what people need, and what to know in times of crisis.
