What Is Facebook Workplace And Could It Benefit Your Business?

Almost a year after Facebook launched their new Facebook Workplace platform, what are people saying and what do you think?

What is Facebook Workplace?

Facebook Workplace is a place in which colleagues can chat, share information, create groups, live stream, have one-to-one chats and much more. Facebook brought it out in competition with Slack, which is a very popular similar tool for remote workforces.

Launched originally in 2016, Facebook Workplace has continued to grow and develop with feedback from its users. They have forged partnerships with Microsoft, Dropbox and Salesforce to allow people to share documents and then be able to edit them directly from the Facebook Workplace feed.

How would it work in your business?

The main advantage of using Facebook Workplace is the familiarity. It is a similar system to that of Facebook and therefore would not require any extensive training for new starters.

Firstly it is important to note this is completely separate to your personal feed. You will have a Facebook Workplace profile which will only show what you post and share within Facebook Workplace.

You have the ability to create groups; these can be formed any way you like but Facebook suggest locations or departments.

You have a news feed to see what other people are up to and give advice as needed. You have a work chat facility which takes away from emailing those one liners to your colleagues. And you even have the ability to live stream those important meetings with your colleagues that cannot be in the room for some reason.

It is secure and means that no one outside of the organisation can access your information.

Pretty much everything you can do in Facebook you can do in Facebook Workplace. But will it replace the highly outdated Intranet?

What are people saying about it?

Reviews so far tend to be positive. Most people are saying that they love that it is easy to use and that people do not need much training to use the platform. Most reviews tend to be from remote companies with colleagues all over the world so I guess a big question is, will we see it being used in local companies soon?

The negative reviews tend to be about the lack of integration with other work platforms but as Facebook Workplace expands, it is starting to add more and more integrations so this could change.

Cost

There isn’t a free version although you can trial it for 90 days. The cost is based on a per user basis and starts at £3 per user for the first 1,000 active users. Facebook says they work out the monthly bill by how many people were active in the platform for that month so if users do not take it up we are assuming you don’t have to pay.

Non-for-profits and educational institutions can get the platform for free all they need to do is apply.
