Google’s Recent Core Algorithm Updates

Whilst there have been other smaller Google algorithm updates (besides the everyday tiny ones) we have seen some turbulence in the rankings over recent months…
Since February there have been three sizeable algorithm updates that have affected a broad range of websites; some will have seen rankings improve while others may see the opposite or nothing at all. Two have been confirmed by Google whilst the third hasn’t.
The first appears to have been on February 20th, and while this hasn’t been confirmed by Google all ranking tools are showing big volatility in rankings.
Clearly there was a big change happening on the 20th and while there is no confirmation from Google there are plenty sites that have seen changes in their rankings.
This was followed by a Google confirmed core algorithm update. Whilst Google is saying there are algorithm updates every day these core algorithm update are released several times a year. The response in the community has been mixed with sites rankings improving, dropping and/or staying the same.
Google’s advice was that this was not targeted to a specific area of SEO and that if your site was to take a hit then there’s ‘nothing wrong with pages that may now perform less well… changes that are benefitting pages that were previously under-rewarded’ – What Google are effectively saying is there is no fix for this algorithm update. Continue as you have been doing and you will see improvements.
On the 16th of April there was another core algorithm update that has also been confirmed by Google.
Again the advice from Google was the same as the previous update, once again referring back to the tweets from the March update stating there is no fix and that Webmasters are to continue with their efforts.
4th – 8th March
Broad core algorithm Update
TL:DR – regardless of how your site has been affected recently. Continue with your great work and you will be rewarded.
